Being on the red carpet is probably similar to being on stage in front of a large audience. The pressure to capture that perfect moment can be immense. With media expectations high and celebrity expectations also in the stratosphere there is little margin for error, you have to deliver and then deliver again at the next event and the next. Very similar to working in sales, you are only as good as your last  photo! 

Dealing with Competition from Other Photographers 

Having shot in the pens with other photographers, yes there is competition amongst other photographers  but not what you think. With other pro shooters vying for that same prime angle and perfect shot, you would think it would be like a rugby match.  But in the chaos that is the red carpet photographers pen camaraderie often prevails amidst the chaos and professionalism is the order of the day, sometimes yo may even work with a competitor to get a photo that maybe would not be achieved on your own. Everybody knows everybody else and you become part of a family.

In the red carpet photography arena unlike studio photography there is very little time for post-processing or post editing.. put simply they have to be spot on IN CAMERA especially if you are live uploading whilst shooting directly to an agency  Quickly  enhancing images for better colour and clarity is common, but too much can distort reality and lead to unrealistic beauty standards. Striking a balance that maintains the integrity of the subject while ensuring they look their best is the art of the modern photographer. The aim of the celebrity photographer at events is to get the shot precise in camera every time so less time is spent on post editing and less time is spent by the media or agency at the other end. It's all time in this game!

Ethical photography is where it's at for the celebrity photographer and it is part of their professional code. From respecting the subjects’ privacy to portraying them in a way that honours their individuality, ethical considerations are paramount. Whether you’re wielding a top-of-the-line DSLR or a more modern and compact mirrorless camera, understanding its strengths and weaknesses and ins and outs and being able to use your camera blind-folded is  crucial in the celebrity photography game. With regard to lenses, different focal lengths give a different look. Experimenting with lenses that flatter facial features when working close up and taking portraits such as a 50mm prime or shooting wide angle from further away to get a full length shot and adding some context to where the celebrity actually is.  Lens choice is crucial. Zoom lenses that cover multiple focal lengths are a main stay for most celebrity photographers especially on the red carpet. Being adaptable to the star and situation is key.

Utilising Natural and Artificial Light

Lighting is basically the very foundation of photography. Natural light can create soft, more romantic feeling images, while artificial light can add drama, clout and depth; the trick is knowing when to use each. Combining the two and finding that sweet balance between natural and artificial light can elevate your photos from ordinary to breathtaking.  Using the correct lighting to reflect a female celebrities look and personality is paramount for a breath taking final result.

Getting that connection between you and the celebrity is key?

Most of the photos that were successful in my case were always the direct eye contact what I would call "electric connection" shots. The look is they are focused on you and nobody else as if no other photographers were there, when in reality there were at least 15 or 20 other photographers in the same vicinity at least. Difficult to achieve but when you have it, it's a photo like nothing else.

Remember, the best photographers are not just good with their gear—they’re also adept at rolling with the punches when it comes to changing lighting conditions..
